Our History

How We Started

May 1, 1963

TH&W CPA's has been providing tax, accounting and auditing services to our clients for over five decades.

James E. Totherow, Sr. opened the firm May 1, 1963 by acquiring from his then employer a branch office of Ernst and Ernst, one of the largest national accounting firms. Totherow provided services to a variety of clients fin the McMinnville and the surrounding area including professional services organizations, banks, and rural telephone co-operatives, agriculture industry, medical service providers, hardwood manufacturing, as well as individuals. James D. Haile joined the firm November 1, 1965 as a partner, and on January 1, 1975 former employee James A Welch returned to the firm as partner.

Partner Additions

Through retirement and staff development the firm evolved through the years. Gentry B. Underhill Jr, and Wayne Smith were added as partners on January 1, 1997. Stephen B. Boyd joined in 2003 and Kevin Sizemore was admitted as a partner in 2011. Kellie Rowland became a partner in 2021.

In 2013 the firm opened an office in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to help our established and new clients in that locality.

The firm continues to pride itself in leading the way to serve individuals and small to medium sized businesses. TH&W serves individuals, non-profit entities, nurserymen and farmers, manufacturing companies, construction contractors, telecommunication companies, and other small to medium sized businesses with the same pride in service and emphasis on relationships that the firm’s founding partner prioritized over 60 years ago.

Middle Tennessee is well known for its lush landscape. We’re a natural home for the booming nursery and greenhouse farming industry. Since we have an office in the “Nursery Capital of the World” we have supported many farmers through the years providing accounting and tax services.
